Considerado um dos maiores pianistas de todos os tempos e autor de peças desafiadoras e de difícil execução, o compositor Sergey Rachmaninov é um autêntico representante do romantismo tardio em solo russo. Graças à sua sensibilidade aguçada e à grande expressividade de suas composições, Rachmaninoff pode ser citado como um dos nomes mais talentosos a transpor, para o plano da música, a beleza e o drama existencial da Rússia pré-revolucionária. Nascido em 1873, foi obrigado a deixar a Rússia após os eventos de 1917 e passou a se dedicar aos concertos no ocidente, sobretudo nos EUA.
