Nascido em 1933, Penderecki ganhou destaque internacional no final dos anos 50 com a composição Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima - sua peça mais interpretada - que foi composta durante sua fase influenciada pelo atonalismo de Webern. Sua obra Paixão Segundo São Lucas, de 1966, fez dele um dos grandes compositores do movimento modernista inspirados em temas religiosos. Sua obra desenvolveu-se em constantemente mutação, as vezes trocando de estilo dramaticamente. Suas peças da década de 70 em diante, geralmente inspiradas por eventos políticos, se tornaram menos densas e harmonicamente convencionais até o fim da carreira.
