A compositora é um dos nomes mais importantes do modernismo norte-americano pelas obras publicadas entre os anos 1920 e 1930. É desse período que se destacam o clássico modernista String Quartet (1931), considerado a sua obra-prima, e as Diaphonic Suites (1930), estudos de contrapontos dissonantes. Essa rica fase experimental reverbera na tardia Suite for Wind Quintet (1952).
