作曲家谭盾师从周文中，在美国求学时，深受约翰 · 凯奇的影响，为日后使用非常规乐器，如水、石头等为音乐添色埋下了伏笔。起先，谭盾于歌剧领域内持续发力，以东方文化为其根基，连续创作出《马克·波罗》等杰作。2000 年，导演李安力邀谭盾为电影《卧虎藏龙》配乐，并与大提琴家马友友合作，大获成功，始确立其国际声誉。其中，由李玟演唱的主题曲《月光爱人》更展现了谭盾对流行音乐不同一般的理解力，对竹笛的运用颇为亮眼，通俗却不流俗。
