Si Gustav Holst est surtout connu pour sa suite Les planètes, son œuvre est bien plus étendue, et révèle un compositeur tourné vers le monde et en quête perpétuelle d’inspiration. Ses compositions chorales, telles que les Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, qui puisent dans la tradition hindoue, montrent l’intérêt de Holst pour des thèmes spirituels et culturels situés en dehors des canons occidentaux. Il en va de même pour la Japanese Suite ou la Beni Mora Suite, dont il s’est inspiré lors de son voyage en Algérie. Avec la « Cotswolds Symphony » ou « Hammersmith », issues de la seconde partie de sa vie, Holst s’est recentré sur les sonorités de son pays natal, l’Angleterre, y introduisant certaines des techniques musicales les plus modernes.
