Whether as part of an orchestra or as an ensemble in their own right, strings possess an almost unassailable expressive power. Luka Sulic, cellist and one-time member of 2CELLOS, has chosen moments where, he tells Apple Music Classical, violins, violas, cellos and double basses combine to “paint vivid pictures and evoke profound emotions”. He continues: “Let these classical treasures transport you to a world where melodies resonate with the pulse of life, the warmth of love and the serenity of nature’s embrace.”
Serene Strings features serenades by Tchaikovsky and Dvořák that explore the string orchestra to its fullest richness, while Sibelius, in a shimmering depiction of an ardent lover, shows the gentle beauty of muted, murmuring strings. Schubert’s Quintet, one of the great chamber works of the early 19th century, shows how string instruments, even in small numbers, can achieve the same majesty and nobleness as a symphony orchestra.
Sulic also chooses four of his own pieces, including the restful “Dreamer” that shows him to be both a composer with a wide emotional palette and a cellist of great sensitivity and poise.
