Marcelle de Manziarly

Well-Known Works

Biography

Composer, conductor, and pianist Marcelle de Manziarly, a student of Nadia Boulanger, became an important figure in her dual adopted countries, France and the U.S. She numbered both Aaron Copland and Igor Stravinsky among her personal friends. Manziarly's early works were influenced by the French Impressionist style that had shaped Boulanger's own work, but her compositions reflected a variety of styles. Manziarly remained in Paris, departing temporarily in 1942 after the German occupation of France. When Paris was liberated in 1944, she composed a Sonate pour Notre Dame de Paris for orchestra. Manziarly remained active as a composer into old age, issuing a Nocturne for violin and piano and a Trilogue for piano trio in 1977. She died in Ojai, California, on May 12, 1989. As of the mid-2020s, about ten of Manziarly's works had been recorded, including several on the 2024 release Marcelle de Manziarly: Chamber Works.
