John Baldwin

Well-Known Works

Biography

An English compiler of musical compositions and a composer as well. Baldwin scratched his way into the indirect service of Queen Elizabeth. (One or more of his songs was performed before the Queen.) Baldwin was a copier with an exceptionally adept touch. Two important bodies of work which he copied include the "Forrester-Heyther Partbooks" and a collection of Willam Byrd's keyboard pieces "My Ladye Nevells Booke". Baldwin wrote songs in three or more parts including "Coridon and Phyllida" and "In Nomine." Instrumental counterpoint was one of his strengths. ~ Keith Johnson
