Biography

Kotter was an accomplished organist and composer who demonstrated skill and an unique musical style with tendencies specifically alligned with the organ. He was a student of Hofhaimer under the patronage of the Elector of Saxony. Kotter held positions as an organist with the court until 1508, the collegiate church of St Nikolaus in Fribourg in 1514 (though later expelled in 1530 for Protestant leanings), and in 1538 he was appointed schoolmaster in Konstanz but returned to Berne that same year. The body of literature associated with Kotter included the arrangement of three organ tablatures belonging to The Amerbach's. Some of the tablatures included his own compositions, and vocal arrangements by a number of other musicians. ~ Keith Johnson
