Gaspard Le Roux

Well-Known Works

Biography

The music of French composer and harpsichordist Gaspard Le Roux was much better known than the facts of his life, which have remained almost completely obscure. Le Roux was a member of the French Baroque keyboard school, and his surviving music, a set of harpsichord pieces published in 1705, shares characteristics with the music of François Couperin. However, it had entirely distinctive aspects, among others, the fact that he was one of few Baroque composers to write music for two harpsichords; his works were widely copied by hand, and it is likely that J.S. Bach knew some of them. His music has attracted new recordings in the 21st century, and in 2024, harpsichordists William Christie and Justin Taylor recorded his Suites for two harpsichords.
