Henri Sauguet

Biography

Self-taught French composer Henri Sauget (1901-1989) was the most prominent member of the "School of Arcueil," a group of composers and artists that were devotees of composer Erik Satie. Sauget met Satie through Darius Milhaud, who suggested that Sauget move from his native Bordeaux to Paris. Sauget was primarily known for his ballet scores, such as Le Chatte (1927) and Les Forains (1945), but he also wrote four symphonies, a significant body of French chansons, electronic music, and many scores for motion pictures. Sauget also enjoyed the challenge of writing for non-conventional instruments, composing serious works for harmonica and musical saw.
