Pasquale Anfossi

Biography

Pasquale Anfossi was an operatic composer who did not achieve viable success until he was 45 years of age with the opera "L'incognita perseguitata," his third. He worked with both Sacchini and Piccinni and there is some evidence that he may have been a student of the latter. He was successful enough to have traveled and remained in London for a few years composing the opera "Il trionfo della costnza" and directing Gluck's "Orfeo" along with compositions by J. C. Bach and Handel. Anfossi's music was banal at best with an over use of two-tone harmonies; his music lacked any duration of intensity. (Fortunately his melodic lines were occasionally touching.) ~ Keith Johnson
