Sergei Taneyev

Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915) was a Russian composer and pianist of the early 20th century, usually remembered as a student of Tchaikovsky and teacher of Scriabin and Rachmaninov. However, he is increasingly being appreciated for his own music. In his youth, he gained a reputation as a virtuoso and was the soloist for the premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. As an instructor at the Moscow Conservatory, Taneyev had to give up touring, though he returned to it later in life. Of his many compositions, Taneyev's four symphonies and nine string quartets have received much attention.
