Sebastián de Vivanco

Biography

Vivanco served as master of the chapel at Segovia Cathedral beginning in 1576 for several years. He wanted to serve in Avila which he was able to do from 1588 until 1602 when he went to Salamanca Cathedral. Vivanco composed approximately fifty motets as well as eighteen Magnificat settings. Ten motets published in "Antologia polifonica sacra" as well as the magnificats demonstrate Vivanco to have been an hallmark composer. He did not employ imitation and was abe to write complex canons. Masses which he composed show a facility with vocal arrangements writing independent parts. His harmonies were consistent with the conventions of the times even though he did use triads that were augmented. ~ Keith Johnson
