Philipp Jakob Riotte

Biography

This German opera composer studied with Anton Andre and made appearances in both capacities by 1804. He served in Gotha as a music director and in Danzig and Magdeburg. He conducted French opera in Erfurt and became active in Vienna from 1818, particularly at the Theatre an der Wein. He enjoyed success with every idiom for which he composed but his operas were the most successful. Over fifty different singspiels were produced on five different theatrical stages in Vienna. Among Riotte's works were "Der Berggeist," "Die Wildschutzen," "Die Zaubernelke," "Das Grandstadtchen," and "Nurredin, Prinz von Persien." ~ Keith Johnson
