Biography

Italian keyboard artist and composer who was the father of Girolamo. Born in Bologna, having died in Venice, he spent much of his time in Urbino. He served temporarily as the organist of Leo X, Francesco Cornaro, at St. Mark's and St. Stephen's in Venice, as well as Treviso Cathedral, and possibly for the papacy of Paul III. Most of his compositions included ricercares, motets, and canzones. Marco is credited with inventing new tablature for the organ and his ricercares are the earliest known examples composed for organ. ~ Keith Johnson
