Bernstein’s sassy and affectionate celebration of New York is one of Rattle’s party pieces. He’s recorded the musical before to great effect and now, with his own London Symphony Orchestra, gives us a big-band approach and still pulls off the magic. We follow the trials and tribulations of two sisters in the Big Apple, swinging by some classic songs along the way, and Danielle de Niese and Alysha Umphress head a strong cast with some beautifully drawn characters. Betty Comden and Adolph Green’s witty lyrics sparkle over Bernstein’s infectious melodies. Pure delight from start to finish.
