Jean-Adam Guilain

Biography

A possible student of Marchand and possibly of German descent (his full name appears as Jean Adam Guillame Freinsburg on the "Pieces de clavecin") Guilain's fame was established with the organ collection "Pieces d'orgue pour le Magnificat. . ." It includes four suites for each of the first four notes of the Magnificat. All of the suites contain seven movements: prelude, duo, trio, dialogue, solos, and a concluding "petit plein jeu." The organ compositions were characterized with qualitative and developed motifs. All parts contained strains worthy of independence but his harpsichord pieces were not conspicuously well composed. ~ Keith Johnson
