Frei Jacinto

Biography

The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 brought with it the destruction of most of Jacinto's compositions. Only two of his works are extant and his sonatas, also likened to the form of tocattas, emphasize the workings of Baroque motifs rather than courtly simplicity. One of the extant works returns to the tonic before the first double bar indicating the possible influence of Seixa. The other sonata also shares the similar patterns and identical repetitions found in Seixa's sonata No. 50. ~ Keith Johnson
