With great flair, Martin Haselböck’s Orchester Wiener Akademie continues its exciting and imaginative task of recording the Beethoven symphonies, where possible, in the exact venues of their premieres. This one was made at Vienna’s Academy of Sciences, which provides appealing acoustics for the invigorating music. Beethoven’s Eighth—punchy, compact, and full of humour—is done terrifically while the Piano Concerto, under Gottlieb Wallisch’s fingers, is lively and completely convincing in its transformation from the Violin Concerto.
