Arthur Foote

Arthur Foote (1853-1937) was one of a handful of late Romantic, New England composers who were trained in German and European musical traditions, but whose music nevertheless had an American perspective. Foote studied with John Knowles Paine at Harvard, and then became an organist and influential teacher in Boston, making several sojourns to Europe for further study. His music is marked by a gift for melody and expressive phrasing and its formal structure. His best work is found in his chamber music and orchestral works, but he also composed for voices later in his career.
