Biography
Karl Goldmark's (1830-1915) musical influences began with his exposure to local folk dances as a child in Hungary, and then move toward a unique blend of German classicism and impressionism through his experiences in Vienna, promoting the music of Brahms and Wagner. His own most influential and successful work is the opera Die Königin von Saba, but modern audiences are more likely to hear his Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, the Rustic Wedding symphonic poem, or his concert overtures. Goldmark's handful of other operas also had some success, but his chamber and piano music falls short of its potential.
