Andreas Kneller

Biography

Kneller is known for few compositions but was the younger brother of Sir Godfrey Kneller the portrait artist. He was also married to one of the daughters of Reincken and served on the committee that examined J.S. Bach and others in 1720 for the organist position at the Jakobikirche in Hamburg. He was asked on a number of occasions to not only test organists but various instruments as well. The genre of his compositions included preludes and fugues and pieces with tocatta features. One collection of organ works includes eight variations by Kneller on "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland." ~ Keith Johnson
