Joseph Calleja - Verdi

Tenor Joseph Calleja is in magnificent form here in music by Verdi. He sings five of the composer’s greatest creations, including a quartet of pieces from Otello. He’s outstanding at the stand-and-deliver arias like “Di quella pira” (Il Trovatore). However, he also shows a subtlety of characterisation and a really touching sense of poetry elsewhere as Don Carlo and Otello—where Angela Gheorghiu joins him, memorably and movingly, for the love duet in one of two guest appearances.
