Rummel composed primarily works for the solo piano including variations. fantasias and works based on opera themes. These compositions demanded a great deal of technical ability. Other instrumental compositions, however, included chamber works for wind instruments and other instruments in diverse combinations. Rummel was in service to the Duke Wilhelm of Nassau between 1815 and 1842. He brought the court orchestra from obscurity to prominence. After studying the violin with Ritter in Mannheim, Rummel had studied with Vogler and Karl Wagner. He also had an opportunity to study Meyerbeer's "Les Hugenots" in Paris and arranged Beethoven's "Kreutzer Sonata" for his Wiesbaden orchestra. Rummel was appreciated for his versatility and accomplished piano playing. ~ Keith Johnson
