Das Violoncello – oder kurz Cello – ist ein Saiteninstrument mit den unterschiedlichsten Klangfarben. Vielen gilt es als das wandlungsfähigste Orchesterinstrument, und mit einem Tonumfang von fast vier Oktaven bietet es immense technische Möglichkeiten. Sein Klang ist sowohl in den tiefen als auch in den hohen Lagen ausdrucksstark und warm, und man sagt, es sei das Instrument, das der menschlichen Stimme am ähnlichsten ist.
