Cette collection exceptionnelle témoigne du passage de John Adams comme compositeur en résidence à l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, pendant la saison 2016-2017. L’une de ses pièces les plus célèbres, Harmonielehre, est dirigée par l’Américain lui-même, tandis que son compatriote Alan Gilbert propose Short Ride in a Fast Machine et que le Vénézuélien Gustavo Dudamel offre City Noir. En résulte un aperçu hétéroclite d’une œuvre dense qui ne connaît aucune barrière stylistique, tant en termes d’orchestrations que de structure harmonique.
