Francesco Geminiani

Biography

Influential Italian violinist, composer, and theorist Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) was overshadowed by Handel and Vivaldi, in spite of the great originality of his compositions. Many of the techniques he introduced or developed in his instructional treatises are now part of standard Baroque performance technique. Two of these are The Art of Playing on the Violin and The Art of Accompaniment on the Harpsichord. His concertos and sonatas are structurally similar to Corelli's, but show greater complexity in harmony and technique. Geminiani frequently reworked his own music and that of Corelli for other instruments.
