Aunque está basada en la liturgia católica tradicional, la Misa de Bernstein no tiene nada de convencional. Sus explosiones de colores, estilos y voces dan forma a un amplio paisaje musical que muestra al compositor en su faceta más atrevida pero también en la más íntima. La partitura, de una ambición que admite pocas comparaciones, requiere una gran orquesta, dos coros, un coro infantil, una banda de marcha y un grupo de rock, y bebe de fuentes tan diversas como el teatro musical, el jazz, el góspel y el rock. De todas las grabaciones completas de la obra, quizás sea esta la más perfecta, gracias en buena parte a la habilidad de Nézet-Séguin para unir en uno solo los mundos divergentes de Bernstein.
