Aunque Handel lo escribió como oratorio, Theodora es a todos los efectos una de las óperas más brillante del compositor, especialmente en versiones como la que aquí dirige Maxim Emelyanychev. La mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato es la estrella entre los solistas, serena pero intensa en el aria de la primera parte “As with Rosy Steps the Morn”. La soprano Lisette Oropesa y el contratenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian brillan como los mártires cristianos Teodora y Dídimo, y resultan conmovedores en la desgarradora escena final.
