Biography

A prominent figure in Icelandic musical life, composer Jón Nordal wrote music known well beyond classical music circles. He was also a pianist and an important educator. Nordal received various honors for his work, both within and beyond Iceland. His works have been included on many recorded collections, and in 1991, the album Jón Nordal -- Portrait was released. Nordal served as director of the Tónlistarskólinn from 1959 to 1992. He also co-founded and served as chair of Musica Nova, a group that promoted the works of young Icelandic composers. Nordal died on December 5, 2024.
