Biography

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I was listening to Sergei Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto when I was in high school and for the first time in my memory instrumental music filled my mind with a richly visual narrative that opened my mind to the veiled drama of orchestral music What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner, Handel: Messiah, HWV 56 Glenn Gould, Bach: Toccatas Vol. 1, BWV 910, 912 & 913 - Gould Remastered Van Cliburn, Van Cliburn - Complete Album Collection The Marriner recording of the Messiah is passionate, reverent, and excellently executed. Van Cliburn's recording of the Brahms 2nd piano concerto has been a beloved musical companion since my youth, Glenn Gould playing Bach was my first CD Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Terra, The Bringer of Life” I love this recording. It is full of drive and directness but it is built upon a sophisticated seven-part structural architecture that operates at the small and large scales. It has a really fun section in the middle that quotes the other movements What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Conducting my orchestral tone poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner in a Los Angeles concert with a narrator. It features some of my best writing. The orchestra was fabulous and audience was deeply moved Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I have written a Symphony and will record it with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2024. That is a major compositional landmark. I also hope to write a full-length musical in the next 5 years.
