Giuseppe Maria Gioacchino Cambini
Biography
This Italian composer and violinist -- who was probably a colleague of Manfredi -- composed a minimum of 600 instrumental works. The other genres he broached included numerous quintets, symphonies, concertos, as well as some operas, an heroic ballet, oratorios, and masses. Cambini's compositions were praised by Mozart. (The praise was not considered tongue-in-cheek even though there had been some animoisty between the two.) Cambini helped to develop the string quartet and although he lacked indiviuality, drama and mindfulness in his music, the instrumental pieces were quite successful given their dissemination. ~ Keith Johnson
