Robert Carver

Biography

A Scottish composer influenced by Josquin Desprez and Isaac as well as the English composers Browne and Wilkinson. The "Scone Antiphonary" is a collection of music that includes much written by Carver. He wrote some masses, anthems and motets at least. The number of voices he employed range between 4 and 19 depending on the worl and also contingent upon the reliability of the extan sources. Carver's earlier works tend toward more elaborate structures and harmonies with extensive development and rich sounds. The later dated works were indicative of the trends of the time to get back to codified chordal simplicity. Accordingly, "Missa, `Pater Creator omnium'" (c. 1546) contains horizontal harmonies with plain melodic lines. ~ Keith Johnson
