Biography
Franz (Frantisek) Benda was a Bohemian violinist, singer, composer, and eldest member of an important family of Bohemian musicians active in Germany in the 18th century. From 1733 until his death in 1786, Benda served as a valued member of the court of King Frederick II of Prussia and named leader of the king's orchestra in 1771. Benda's fame as a violinist was widespread and attracted many students, though little of his music was published during his lifetime. Benda produced numerous violin concertos, sonatas, chamber pieces, and about 17 symphonies, though the authenticity of some works has been challenged.
