Biography

Collections of Armenian folksongs and a collection of music for the order of worship with settings for three or four part male choruses or four part mixed choruses were the primary contribution of Ekmalyan. The corpus of his works also included overtures for orchestra, choruses, piano compositions, songs and folk song settings. He had studied music at St Petersburg Conservatory with Rimsky-Korsakov. The majority of his life was spent learning and teaching in his home town of Tbilisi. Ekmalyan taught a course in Armenian notation and developed a chapel choir at Nersessian College. ~ Keith Johnson
