Jean de Latre

Biography

The compositions of this Netherlands musician were comprised primarily of secular chansons and sacred lamentations and motets. Problematically his works are difficult to catalogue as there was another composer with a similar name writing at the same time. Characteristic differences of the music have probably not been scrutinized enough to clarify the needed distinctions. As a teacher De Latre had students including Magnon and de Villers. Intonations and melodies favor textual accentuation and his melodies were soft, maleable and favored the imitative style. ~ Keith Johnson
