Joachim Nikolas Eggert
Biography
Joachim Nicolas Eggert was a Swedish composer and conductor. He studied violin as a youth, and later pursued composition and music theory with Johann Nikolaus Forkel. In 1802 he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court theater of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and in 1803 he played violin in the Royal Court Orchestra of Sweden. He joined the Royal Swedish Music Academy in 1807, and from 1808 to 1812 he served as chief conductor for the Royal Court Orchestra. He composed operas, cantatas, and four symphonies, and brought Classical Viennese style to Sweden in his own works and performances of Haydn, Mozart, and the early symphonies of Beethoven. Eggert died at 34 from tuberculosis.
