ヘンデルの『Theodora』はオラトリオにカテゴライズされるが、実際には非常にオペラ的な作品だ。残念ながら広く親しまれているとは言い難いが、このアルバムで聴けるロシアの指揮者Maxim Emelyanychevが率いる優れた演奏家たちによる魅惑的なパフォーマンスは、このオラトリオがヘンデルの偉大な遺産の一つであることを証明している。本作に参加しているソリストたちの中でもとりわけスター的な存在であるアメリカのメゾソプラノ歌手、ジョイス・ディドナートは、第1部のアリア「As With Rosy Steps the Morn」で、落ち着きのある滑らかな歌声を響かせる。ソプラノのLisette OropesaとカウンターテナーのPaul-Antoine Bénos-Djianも、それぞれキリスト教の殉教者テオドーラとディディムスを見事に演じ、胸を打つラストシーンを感動的に描き出す。また表情豊かな合唱も、ヘンデルのファン必聴のこのアルバムに、さらなる価値を加えている。
