펠릭스 멘델스존이 1846년 작곡한 거대한 오라토리오는 성서의 내용을 다룹니다. 바로크 시대의 바흐나 헨델의 오라토리오에서 영감을 받은 멘델스존은 버밍엄에서 3년에 한 번 열리는 음악 축제의 위촉을 받아 'Elijah(엘리야)' 작업에 착수했습니다. 영국을 자주 방문했던 그는 헨델의 대규모 영어 오라토리오의 명성을 잘 알고 있었고, 1750년 바흐 사후 처음으로 'St. Matthew Passion(마태 수난곡)' 연주를 맡았던 바흐 음악의 대가이기도 했죠. 42개 악장을 자랑하는 '엘리야'는 풀 오케스트라와 오르간 연주자, 8명의 독창자와 대규모 합창단이 동원되는 작품입니다.
