Steve Elcock

Biography

Composer Steve Elcock was almost completely self-taught. He emerged from near-total obscurity in late middle age with music in a style distinct from other contemporary symphonists. His orchestral piece Hammering was played in 2009 by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra but gained little notice. Music critic Martin Anderson hailed Elcock's work as some of the greatest orchestral music written by a British composer in the last 50 years. That led to new performances and soon recordings of Elcock's music. The Siberian Symphony Orchestra recorded three of Elcock's symphonies on a pair of albums, the second of which appeared in 2022. By 2024, some 20 of Elcock's works had been recorded, and he had completed his Symphony No. 9 and Symphony No. 10.
