Early music trio Latitude 37 bring their signature energy and imagination to X, combining utterly joyful music-making with moments of breathtaking introspection. Cavalli’s “Passacaglia”, one of the jewels of 17th-century music, sighs and weeps, while Marais’ “La Sonnerie de Sainte-Geneviève du mont de Paris” rings out with a carefree purpose. There are some fascinating ­and fun surprises along the way, including an eerie performance of Satie’s “Gnossienne No. 3” from the 1890s, traditional Bulgarian dances that lollop and skitter, and Lev Knipper’s “Song of the Steppes”, its melancholic beauty enhanced by the plaintive tones of Latitude 37’s Baroque instruments.
