Schubert: Winterreise, D. 911

German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was gifted with an extraordinarily beautiful and versatile voice as well as a natural dramatic instinct. It’s this magical combination that made him arguably the finest interpreter of Romantic German lieder. His long partnership with pianist Gerald Moore produced what many still regard as unbeatable recordings of Schubert’s great song cycles, including Die schöne Müllerin, Schwanengesang and this, perhaps the greatest of them all—the composer’s icy tale of unrequited love, Winterreise. Fischer-Dieskau and Moore recorded Winterreise twice, with this version dating from 1971 and acclaimed for its intensity and dramatic spontaneity.
