Biography
An English composer of anthems and collaborator with Michael Arne on the opera "Almena" Batishill's main period of production was between the years of 1760 and 1775. His anthems included "Call to Remembrance" which was sung at his own funeral. It is still performed in cathedrals today. The titles of some of his more memorable songs include "Kate of Aberdeen," and "I Loved Thee Beautiful and Kind." The anthem, however, is most exemplary of his works employing rich blends in a multi-voiced arrangement. Battishill was also renowned for his remarkable memory having once sung a number of airs from Samuel Arnold's "Prodigal Son," twenty years after he heard them. ~ Keith Johnson
