Biography
Jacopo da Bologna (ca. 1335-ca. 1386) was an Italian court composer during the Trecento and one of the earliest composers of polyphonic secular songs. Madrigals dominate Jacopo's output of 34 known compositions and are among the earliest known works in the genre. Non al suo amante is based on a text of Petrarch and is the only extant musical setting written while the poet still lived. In the mid-fourteenth century, Jacopo worked alongside Giovanni da Cascia in Verona, and was also employed in Milan; Jacopo may have ended his career in Spain. Jacopo also authored an invaluable treatise on mensural notation.
