Harold Meltzer

Biography

Composer Harold Meltzer won several awards and fellowships, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and founded the Sequitur ensemble, which he co-directed for many years. He was known to take inspiration for his compositions from a variety of sources. From 2005 to 2012, Meltzer taught at Vassar College. He wrote music for a wide variety of instrumentations, many of which were acclaimed. He was commissioned by several major organizations in the U.S., including the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His 2008 composition, Brion, for flute, oboe, guitar, mandolin, violin, and cello, earned him a nomination as a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. The first album dedicated to Meltzer's works was a 2010 release titled Harold Meltzer: Brion; Sindbad; Exiles. Meltzer died on August 12, 2024, aged 58.
