Ludwig Maurer

Biography

Maurer was fortunate enough to study with Haack who was Frederick the Great's Konzertmesiter. At the age of fourteen he was admitted to the royal chapel after giving a sterling performance in Berlin. Maurer directed Count Vsevolozhsky's orchestra in Riga, traveled throughout Germany and Paris for eight years, returning once again to the service of the Count. In St Petersburg Maurer acceeded to the position of the director of the French opera. He composed a number of works for the violin including ten concertos, six quartets, and a number of chamber pieces. The compositions demonstrated a diverse and virtuoso violin ability. Maurer also composed operas including "Aloise," "Der neue Paris," and "Die Runenschrift." ~ Keith Johnson
