Christian Gotthilf Tag

Biography

Homilius assisted Tag in obtaining a scholarship to the Kreuzschule in Dresden. Tag studied there for six years becoming a Kantor and schoolteacher. His reputation as both an organist and Kantor were well deserved. In his composing of a great deal of Kantorenmusik, Tag set a number of cantatas to pietist texts. Characteristics of these pieces included extensive symbolism, tone-painting and fugal development. Masses composed by Tag included recitatives and arias and his works for keyboard demonstrate an indebtedness to Hiller. ~ Keith Johnson
