Cornelis Verdonck

Well-Known Works

Biography

This Flemish composer worked in Antwerp as a chorister and in the court chapel of Madrid. He studied at Douai University and was a student of Severin Cornet in Antwerp. He was back in Madrid in 1584 singing in the royal chapel and returned to the Netherlands by 1599. Verdonck also served the governor of Wishelen and Serskamp as well as at Eindhoven. He composed motets, chansons, madrigals and a Magnificat set for five voices. The chansons and madrigals were arranged by a true artisan but do not go beyond the conventions of his contemporaries. ~ Keith Johnson
