Biography
Schneider was a German instrumentalist who played the horn, oboe, and other instrumetns having studied with the violinist Magnold at Darmstadt. He also studied composition with Portmann. In service Schneider worked in Darmstadt, for the court orchestra in Rheinsberg, and in Berlin in various capacities including director of the Royal Theater, Kapellmeister, and conductor of the opera. The compositions by Schneider were all sound as he was able to skillfully exploit all of the conventions of the time in addition to demonstrating his virtuosity and the knowledge he had of various instruments. Schneider composed various Singspiels, symphonies, concertos, and chamber duets and is remembered for his "Geschichte der Oper und des koniglichen Opernhauses in Berlin" -- The History of Opera and the Royal Opera houses in Berlin, 1852. ~ Keith Johnson
